Project Description

Implementing BI before ERP change can be crucial for success

Hvorfor du bør implementere BI før skift af ERP

Over the years, we have often met the misconception that implementation of a Business Intelligence system needs to be planned after the implementation of a new ERP system.

Nothing could be more wrong.  There are numerous reasons for doing just the opposite. Make sure to implement a well-structured BI system before moving to a new ERP system. You will be able to harvest plenty of benefits and gain.

  • Implementing BI first, gives the advantage of not being without vital information during a (long) ERP implementation period
  • You will be able to keep all the vital reports and analyses, when moving to a new ERP, thus making the transition less painful
  • It is far easier to implement the BI system on top of an existing- and, to you, well known ERP system. Since you have a long experience with the data structure within this ERP, it will be easier to compare, test and ensure data validity.
  • After implementation of your new ERP, only the data mapping needs to be adjusted to extract data from the new ERP. All calculations, reports, analyses and user authorisation, roles etc. would not be affected
  • But even more significant is the fact that you can have access to historical data from your previous ERP together with new ERP based data from day one of the new system
  • The BI solution can even be used as a guide for the needed information that the new ERP must supply as a minimum in order to support management decisions
  • Last, but not least, implementing a BI solution is faster and less costly than implementing ERP. The BI solution might even give the existing ERP a longer life. Alternatively, you can save money for licensing and maintenance on your Old ERP system. When moving your old ERP data to a Data Warehouse database, you could avoid keeping the old ERP system up running for a longer period in order to keep track of history as your BI solution has all needed information.

The BI solution can help you define the configuration of your new ERP setup

We cannot emphasise enough how important it is that you consider the above advantages when you plan the transition to a new ERP. It can really harm your bottom line if your organisation is left with poor or no reporting and analysis opportunities over a longer time period.

Your BI solution should be defined to support your business strategy and business processes as well as allow you to follow and measure your most vital business indicators. The BI system can thus help guide how your ERP is configured in order to support the business processes and deliver the data needed for performance measuring. Hence, the BI solution will be your guide and control system before, during and after your ERP implementation.
